Tom Thompson

Chief Tom Thompson is a United States Air Force Veteran and has spent his entire post-military career in law enforcement. After retiring as Assistant Chief of Police at Miamisburg Police Department, he served as Director of Public Safety & Chief of Police and Security at a large health network spanning 13 jurisdictions in Ohio. He is now the Chief of Police & Director of Public Safety at Sinclair College in Dayton, Ohio.

Investigating unspeakable crimes over the course of his career, he has witnessed extreme trauma and tragedy and understands how difficult it can be to move past those experiences. Through his faith and strict adherence to his personal care routines, he has overcome those stressors in healthy ways and he has been instrumental in assisting others to do the same.

Tom is a highly effective, proven non-profit organization and law enforcement executive who does not shy away from tough conversations and hard decisions. He has a unique ability to ask the right questions and help people see things from a different vantage point. As a certified coach, trainer, and public speaker, he is an impactful communicator with people of all backgrounds and cultures. His rich background and expertise in the criminal justice system have given him the ability to quickly identify organizational gaps and solutions to challenges many law enforcement agencies and municipalities face.

He is a speaker and consultant with Law Enforcement Action Partnerships (LEAP). He teaches as an adjunct instructor for Sinclair in their Advanced Job Training (AJT) program in Ohio prisons. Chief Thompson serves on the Boards of Welcome Dayton, Macedonia Community Development Coalition, Law Enforcement Action Partnerships, Heroic Deeds, and the Advisory Board of the Dayton Equity Center. He is also a lifetime member of the NAACP.  Tom received a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Chapman University and a Master’s in Public Administration from Wright State University.

In 2019, together with his wife, Tiffany, Tom founded Valens Solutions, a non-profit organization which focuses on connecting underserved and impoverished refugee and immigrant populations in the Dayton, Ohio area to resources necessary to improve health and wellness such as employment, housing, education, health and dental care needs, and navigating additional efforts in need of language and cultural translation. Tom also assists with civil and criminal court matters to advocate for equitable, just outcomes. In addition, Valens Solutions provides tangible support for minority persons entering the Law Enforcement and Nursing professions.
